Week 4 after Knee surgery, I’m doing my exercises and physio frantically trying to get fit to play in an Open competition down at Royal North Devon. With 3 days to go I reluctantly have to withdraw, where as my right knee is making really good progress, my left knee isn’t playing ball. I let the guys at Golf Monthly know and they make the call to RND to say they will be a 2 ball for the Friday comp. Jezz picks me up at 7-am and we start what should be a 4 hour drive avoiding the motor ways. To say that it was raining would be an understatement, in fact the journey took over 5 hours with the rain briefly letting up a few miles from the course. Although I’m not playing I’m still working, the rain has started again and the secretary lets Mike and Jezz know that I’ve been replaced with a 16 year old plus 3 member named Jimmy Mullen. The club arrange a covered Gator for me to get around in and also keep the cameras dry. These were some of the worse conditions I’ve experienced on a golf course, I can honestly say that I was really happy not to be playing. Taking shots with a camera was almost impossible so shooting a decent score in these conditions was equally difficult unless of course your name is Jimmy Mullen. Jimmy carded a gross 71 which was more than good enough to win the Silver Medal. Royal North Devon is a fantastic links course, the members and staff are generously helpful and very proud of their clubs history. I’m looking forward to going back shooting the course and also shooting a reasonable score.
